Joplin tornado path7/23/2023 They listen for watches and warnings, have a plan and a place for sheltering, and maintain multiple, redundant methods of receiving life-saving warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio. The people of Joplin have learned to pay attention to the weather forecast. In reality, they represent the resurrection of one of the older parts of Joplin, where homes built in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s were ground to pieces by one of the most violent tornadoes in American history. Thousands of recently built homes with sapling trees in the landscaping and new cars on the driveway give the appearance of a newly developed subdivision. Today, the Joplin tornado zone looks fresh and modern. They then performed an epic evacuation of patients from the hospital’s upper floors, carrying them down pitch-black stairwells to waiting ambulances. John’s staff performed heroically, treating a rush of patients who showed up by ambulance, car, pick-up truck, or who just walked in. A gas main on one end of the building and an oxygen storage cylinder on the other end were both leaking, and had their contents combined, the resulting explosion would have been horrific. An air conditioning unit on the building’s roof was lifted off and dropped onto the ground where it disabled the hospital’s back-up generators, plunging the badly damaged building into darkness. John’s Regional Medical Center, but it dealt a horrific blow. Had the tornado’s path been a mere half-mile south, it would have taken out both Joplin hospitals. Because the twister was large and rain-wrapped, it was difficult to know which way to turn, and some drivers made a fatal mistake. The majority of victims died due to what the coroner designated as “multiple blunt force trauma.”Ī few fatalities were recorded in automobiles, several of which apparently drove into the tornado’s path. ![]() In the majority of tornadoes, this may have been sufficient, but in the EF-4 and EF-5 damage zones, interior rooms and hallways offered less than ideal protection. ![]() ![]() Because there are very few basements in Joplin, this means interior baths and closets, or hallways. Most fatalities in Joplin occurred indoors, and there are indications many victims were in the best position available to them. During that interminable time, your home is wracked by hurricane-force winds from different directions, loaded with debris large and small, battering even a well-built home to pieces. Moving at 25 mph, a tornado of this size takes almost two minutes to pass over your house. It was easy to mistake the cloud for heavy rain, but a jet-like roar was a clue to many that the rain was obscuring an enormous funnel.Īfter touchdown, the twister rapidly attained EF-5 power, ¾ of a mile in width. Still, when folks stepped outside to verify the tornado, they couldn’t see a tornado funnel, just a very black sky coming closer to town. Some in town may have been confused by the on-again, off-again outdoor sirens, but they understood something important was happening. The city’s outdoor tornado sirens went on at 5:11, but tornado sirens can only run for three minutes before they must cycle off to cool down. NOAA Weather Radios in the area received two tornado warnings as the western sky grew ominously black. The NWS then issued a second tornado warning eight minutes later, at 5:17, for what would become the Joplin tornado. The National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri had issued a tornado warning at 5:09 for a storm on the northern edge of Joplin. In all, about 30% of the city was wrecked. 7,500 homes were damaged, 4,000 of them totally destroyed. A bizarre collision of thunderstorms added incredible energy into the air and the resulting twister spent the next 17 minutes tracking due east across the southern third of Joplin. went from a tiny rope-like funnel to a massive “wedge” in less than 30 seconds. The tornado that dropped down on the west edge of Joplin at 5:36 P.M. Why? Because if you are caught in a violent tornado, only a designated storm shelter or basement will offer you the protection you need to survive. ![]() Although these “worst case” tornadoes are rare (some years we don’t have a single EF-5), they are responsible for the most deaths. Although the Fujita tornado intensity scale did not exist in the 1950’s, we know from damage reports the Flint tornado was, like Joplin, an EF-5 tornado, with winds of more than 200 mph. Prior to Joplin, the last tornado to kill more than 100 people occurred in Flint, Michigan in 1953. It took $3 billion to repair and replace everything the twister destroyed. Besides being the deadliest tornado of the past fifty years, it was also the costliest tornado in U.S. Saturday, marks the 10 year anniversary of the Joplin, Missouri EF-5 tornado.

Dwarf fortress stone mug7/23/2023 ![]() The number of migrants is affected by how far below the population cap your fortress is. ![]() Note that if your fortress should ever become a mountainhome, you will receive an additional migration wave with the promotion, regardless of your population cap. The number of migrants depends on the created wealth of your fortress and so is affected by your dwarves' activities. Keep in mind that your population must be at least 80 to get a king and 100 to obtain the current game features. There is also a STRICT_POPULATION_CAP setting, which prevents both immigration and babies when reached (although both can be violated by a few special cases, such as the arrival of a monarch). That cleaning doesn't work "outside" is a known limitation that Toady will be addressing with suggested improvements ( 0001140).In v0.40.05 and above, the d_init.txt POPULATION_CAP setting immediately prevents further immigration once the desired number is achieved, bypassing the two hardcoded migrant waves. That tavernkeepers insist on getting patrons drunk by serving them excessive drinks is being tracked in 0009653. Magma seems to be capable of removing mud, though.ĭrunkenness exists, causing spills and incapacitation that much is intended behavior. The construction of a wall or building (such as a paved road) on top of mud removes the mud and it's gone when the construction is removed, but there is a risk the floor is then transformed into the local soil type rather than remaining stone. Mud can not be removed without risk of side effects. If you don't want the cleaning, booze loss, death, and (lethal) non lethal brawling (that can be) resulting from the serving of alcohol you can easily stop that by refraining from assigning a bartender and any performers to the tavern.ĭwarves do not clean above ground, and a roof does not change the location to underground. The above is not a bug but intended behavior. When a tavern has personnel serving alcohol enthusiastic servitors push drinks into patrons' hands which can induce some patrons to drink until going unconscious, at which time they will no longer be capable of drinking, they fall on the floor and spill their drink, and start to suffer injury to their lungs due to suffocation, which explains the loss of alcohol and aborted drinking task, as well as the resultant cleaning and recover wounded jobs. New residents carried to hospital during first drink Tavern keeper/performers repeatedly serve alcohol until visitors and even dwarves drink themselves to death It was way too dirty (sand, dyes, blood, alcohol and even never evaporating mud) and impossible to make Dwarves to clean up that. A reason I stopped playing my first fortress. In this case I suspect not consumed alcohol still left in mugs is being reserved by next drinking job and there is some unresolved mug-drink-job vs mug-drink-job conflict over the alcohol left overs, which results on spilling alcohol on floor, dropping mug on floor, cancellation of another drinking job and invoking calls to "recover wounded" and "cleaning" jobs.Īnnoying bug, as it drains fast a small alcohol stockpile.Īlso I like building my locations above ground and not under, so there are some issues with cleaning in roofed locations. Usher confessions tracklist7/23/2023 ![]() I thought, this seems comfortable for this artist and I should try to make the coolest slow record we could possibly make. Your hit “You Make Me Wanna,” another Usher hit, is another big collaboration.įor that song, I felt like Usher had just come off working with Devante and Jodeci on his first album, and felt like I was trying to make a ballad type of mid-tempo record. The slow process in the studio is cooperative thinking, not thinking necessarily that the first thing that comes to your mind is the song. So if I’m collaborating, I understand my role and understand the slow process in the studio. Other times I’ll come up with a concept - I’m big on the hooks - and I’ll start writing a hook and if I write the hook it automatically gives someone a chance to understand what they want to say in the verse. That process is pretty much the same every time, unless get I get the urge to write the entire song, and then the songs first flow out of me completely and then I don’t give no one else the chance to write on the song. ![]() We had a sound going for Aretha and we came together and started writing the song. When I was watching the video and thinking about the songwriters - I wrote the song with Trina Broussard and Trey Lorenz - and since it sampled Luther Vandross it had three or four other people’s names on there as writers. Yesterday we celebrated Aretha Franklin’s birthday and I posted a clip on my Instagram of one of the songs I did for her on the album. What’s the best part of writing and producing as part of a team? You’ve always been a big collaborator in your songwriting. I haven’t written anything down since I started working with JAY-Z. If you’re driving in the car, you don’t have the song lyrics in front of you but you hear a song on the radio and memorize it from that. We memorize them tone for tone, without looking at a piece of paper. And then I started realizing, it might be easier than writing it down because we all memorize the songs that we really love. He said, “I wrote it, I just didn’t write it on paper.” I had never seen this done before. He came to the studio and I saw him do that and I was like, “What the hell was this?” And he said, “I had my rap,” and he didn’t write one thing down in the studio. It took about an hour, and the process was me saying the lyrics to him. I stopped writing lyrics down on paper after me and JAY-Z did “Money In the Bank.” They’re something I just hold in my mind. Sounds like the second song came together pretty quickly. I just had to put it in the right words that would make it fit for being Usher’s story. Those lyrics for part two were something that I had actually gone through in my life they were a reliving of a situation. There’s a part two to this story.” And immediately, as soon as Usher said there’s a part two, my brain clicked and every word of “Confessions Part II” flew out of my mouth. This is crazy.” And then Usher was like, “You can’t stop right there. Once that version of “Confessions” was finished, Usher and myself was all like, “This is it. It’s a guy feeling bad about himself, about what he had been doing to the girl, so he just came out and told her. In that song, I talked about how everything I’ve been doing is all bad. When we did “Confessions,” we really had started with another song called “All Bad” and the “Confessions” part was in parentheses. What’s the story behind the song and the sequel? Let’s talk about “Confessions” and “Confessions Part II,” both recorded by Usher.

Instant pot duo evo plus baking7/22/2023 ![]() I’ve already touched on this above, but I’ll quickly do it again, here.Īfter testing, we found that when we left the beef out on the counter to come closer to room temperature before cooking it, the pot roast was much more tender at the end of the cooking time. Step 1, Season the beef and bring it to room temperature. If you own one of them, you should be able to use this recipe without any problems (just make sure you read the user manual first). Other brands make electric pressure cookers, too. In our photos, we are using a 6-quart Instant Pot, which is an electric pressure cooker. How to Make Pot Roast in a Pressure Cooker (Instant Pot) Using thawed beef also allows us to brown the outside of the meat before braising it, which adds a lot of extra flavor to dish. This extra time creates the most flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth pot roast. That said, for the best results, we highly recommend following our method which calls for thawed beef that’s seasoned with salt and been left on the counter long enough to take the chill off. Technically, the answer is yes, the cook time will just be longer (20 to 30 minutes longer). You might be wondering if you can use frozen beef for pot roast. Right after taking the beef out of the fridge, we season it liberally with salt, which means that as the beef sits, the salt has a chance to seep into the meat, making it extra tasty when cooked. This extra time has another benefit, it gives us a chance to season the meat. After testing this pot roast recipe in our kitchen, we found that if you start with beef straight out of the refrigerator, the roast doesn’t become as tender as when you give the beef some time out of the fridge so that it comes up to room temperature before cooking it.įor a three-pound roast, we found that leaving it on the counter for 1 hour was perfect. Now, I mentioned there was extra time for bringing the beef to room temperature. The great news is that a pressure cooker makes much quicker work of pot roast compared to a slow cooker, oven, or when it is cooked on the stove-top. I know 2 hours and 30 minutes might seem like a long time, but for ultra-tender and juicy beef, we need all of it. This includes the time to bring the beef to room temperature (more on that below), searing time, and the cook time required inside the pressure cooker. For the total time needed, consider the time recommended to bring the beef to room temperature (more on that below), searing time, and the times required to release pressure built up inside the pressure cooker.įor a 3-pound piece of beef, the total time required will be about 2 hours and 30 minutes. You must understand that the time shown above is the actual cooking time, not the total time the recipe will take. As a general rule, when cooking beef roasts in a pressure cooker, assume 20 minutes of cook time for every pound of meat. ![]() ![]() The time it takes to cook pot roast in an Instant Pot will vary depending on how large your piece of meat is. How Long Does it Take to Cook Pot Roast in a Pressure Cooker (Instant Pot)? When I say tougher cuts of meat, I’m talking about the leaner cuts with lots of connective tissue. It’s because of this that tougher cuts of beef work so well. Traditionally, the beef cooks at a low temperature for a long time. The best cuts of beef for pot roast are tougher cuts of meat like chuck, brisket, and round. A pressure cooker takes the cooking time down dramatically. In this recipe, we are using a pressure cooker (specifically, our Instant Pot) to make the pot roast. You can make this in a Dutch oven on the stove-top, in the oven, in a slow cooker, and a pressure cooker. To make it, sear a large cut of beef until browned on all sides, and then cook it with aromatics like herbs, onions, carrots, and broth until it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender. Pot roast is more of a method than a specific cut of meat. Related: Use your Instant Pot to make quick and easy salsa verde chicken What is Pot Roast?

One of the best features in Lightroom 4 are the Shadows and Highlights sliders. ![]() In my dragonfly photo I pushed the contrast up slightly which helps to get the subject separated from the background a bit more and adds a bit more crispness to the photo. The more contrast you apply the more defined the difference between lights and darks will get which can be observed in the stretching of the histogram. In the vast majority of my photographs I’ll end up increasing the contrast slightly as it tends to help bring out details and make the photo “pop” a bit more.Īs you watch the histogram you’ll notice that the data will either get stretched out or be pushed together depending on which way you go. Next up is the contrast slider, which will help to define the areas of lightness and darkness. In the photo below I added just a small bit to the exposure to brighten it up slightly. Watch your histogram and you’ll start to see the data shift from side to side as you make the changes. To lighten an underexposed photo simply slide the exposure slider to the right – if you’d like to reduce the brightness then slide it to the left. It is designed to adjust the mid-tones of the photo and therefore will help to add or reduce to the overall brightness of the scene. When I process photos I like to start with the exposure slider, as it’s a good overall adjustment to get started. To get here simply click on “Develop” and then if it isn’t opened already click on the “Basic” tab. We will tackle all of these areas by using just a handful of sliders in the basic tab of Lightroom. When you break it down there are five key parts of almost every photo that you’re going to want to adjust and those are as follows: mid-tones, shadows, highlights, sharpness and white balance. ![]() ![]() Lightroom is filled with all sorts of options from drop down menus to sliders and all this can make get started for the first time overwhelming, especially if you’ve had no editing experience in the past, so today we are going to look at the very basics of Lightroom.
